July brings a Blast of Theatre with Theatre Camps for Young Artists!

June 24th, 2013

Gallery 7 Theatre & Performing Arts, a full-time theatre based in Abbotsford, B.C., will be offering children and teens the unique opportunity to delve into the theatrical world at the theatre’s ninth annual Summer Drama Blast program this July.

“Summer Drama Blast is an opportunity for children and teens to explore theatre with trained and experienced theatre artists,” says Gallery 7 Theatre’s Executive Artistic Director, Ken Hildebrandt. “It’s a great opportunity for young people to explore their creative sides in a fun, life-affirming environment while exploring important life-skills such as team-work, cooperation, self-confidence and a healthy self-image.”

For children ages 6 – 12, Summer Drama Blast offers generalized performance camps that allow children to explore their artistic abilities and to learn about basic and intermediate theatre skills such as blocking, line memorization and characterization. With age specific camps, children have the chance to be with others their own age and jump in at their own level. Each camp ends with a short performance where campers can showcase what they’ve learned through-out the week for family and friends.

These age specific camps are led by trained and experienced theatre practitioners: Katherine Hill of Langley, B.C. will lead Creative Explosions for age 6 & 7, Megan Mackenzie of Abbotsford, B.C. will lead Dramatic Rumblings for ages 8 & 9, Carissa Boynton of Mission, B.C. will lead Stage Eruptions for ages 10 & 11 and Annette Reilly of Vancouver, B.C. will lead Dynamite Playmakers for ages 12 & 13.

Young people ages 14 – 18 who are looking to build on their high-school theatre experience, prepare for college & professional theatre training or wanting deeper involvement in community theatre, will benefit from specialized theatre camps such as Performance Intensive, Acting for the Camera with Annette Reilly, or Improvisation led by Cliff Prang. These topic-specific camps offer youth the opportunity to explore performance at a more advanced level from gifted theatre professionals.

Summer Drama Blast 2013 is perfect for both the aspiring actor, those who want to explore the world of theatre or for young people looking to get out of their shell a bit more. “The core idea is to help young people grow into well-rounded individuals with a healthy appreciation of how theatre can entertain and communicate. No matter what the experience or talent, young people will have a great time,” explains Hildebrandt.

Summer Drama Blast 2013 runs July 8 – 26, 2013 at the MEI Schools Campus, 4081 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. While registration will be open through-out the camps, special early bird rates are available until June 30, 2013 as well as special discount packages for teens wishing to take more than one topic-specific camp. For complete information on instructors, available camps, pricing, or registration, please call 604-504-5940 or visit the Gallery 7 Theatre website at www.gallery7theatre.

LOCALLY WRITTEN CONNECTED: THE MUSICAL HITS PACIFIC THEATRE

Vancouver, BC - Three local performers and musical improvisers have successfully written their first musical that is set to run at Pacific Theatre this July 19th-27th. Inspired by news reports about Vancouver being a lonely city, Connected: The Musical is a story about an online dating firm and four characters that struggle to find love, connection and ultimately themselves in a fast-paced, internet-obsessed world.

Connected is a very real story about love and connection in 2013,” says writer Alison Chisholm. “With Vancouver getting flack for being an unwelcome city and with online dating on the rise – we knew we had a great story to write.”

“And what better way than to make it a musical?” laughs Peter Abando, composer of Connected.

“It’s thrilling and terrifying to see our work come alive,” says writer Jennifer Pielak. “We are performing in it too and are excited to have such an amazing team of local talent to work with.”

Created by Peter AbandoAlison Chisholm, and Jennifer PielakConnected: The Musical features these three performers along with local talent including Richard MeenBrad RossingtonEvan ThompsonJohn Voth and Jeremy van Dyck. The show is directed by Jessie Award Nominee Chris Lam with set design by fellow nominee Lauchlin Johnston, lighting design by Jonathan Kim, choreography by Andrea Loewen, and stage management byChristie Maxson.

Produced by Whirlwind Theatre Productions, Connected: The Musical runs from July 19th-27th at Pacific Theatre (1440 W 12th Ave). Shows are Wednesday-Saturday at 8pm with 2pm matinees on Saturdays. “PTC’s Writer’s Colony was one of the most valuable experiences I’ve had in my twenty-five years in the business… The caliber of dramaturgy was top notch. I was able to crack open some large questions about my play and my process. The feedback was guided and useful and far more in-depth than customary dramaturgical processes I’ve had…”  – Lucia Frangione,

Submit digital applications to: plays@playwrightstheatre.com, with “Colony submission” in the subject line, and the PDFs of your letter, resume, and play draft attached. Digital applications will only be processed once the application form and accompanying application fee has been received.

GREASE square

January 30 – February 23, 2014

A 1950’s rock ‘n’ roll musical!

Directed by Peter Jorgensen
Musical Direction – Courtenay Ennis
Choreography – Kayla Dunbar
Costume Design – Jessica Bayntun
Lighting Design – Alan Brodie

One of the most popular musicals of all time, GREASE transports us back to Rydell High’s spirited class of ’59; gum chewing, hubcap stealing, hot rod loving boys with D.A.’s and their wise cracking girls in bobby sox and pedal pushers capture the look and sound of the 1950’s in this rollicking musical. While hip Danny and wholesome Sandy sort out their mutual attraction, the gang sings and dances its way through nostalgic scenes like the pyjama party, the prom, the burger palace and the drive-in movie.

Western Canadian Premiere

March 20 – April 6, 2014

Directed by Sarah Rodgers

In the summer of 1959, a sleepy town in rural Ontario was rocked by a tragedy that changed the community forever and sent shockwaves around the world. A 12-year-old girl named Lynne Harper was found raped and strangled to death. Days later, 14-year-old Steven Truscott was charged with her murder. After a two week trial by jury, the boy was found guilty and sentenced to hang, making him the youngest person to sit on Canada’s death row. With honesty and heart this play challenges us to consider the standards of justice in Canada, not only 50 years ago, but also for today. Finalist for the 2009 Governor General’s Award for Fiction.
